'My £1,500 cashback went on furniture and building work': Best mortgages to help you kit out your new home

Every penny counts when you are buying your first home. So it is no surprise that a raft of special savings accounts for hopeful buyers, plus a new range of low-fee, no-fee and even cashback mortgages, are fast becoming the most popular first-time buyer products. The best deals can give you enough spare cash to furnish your home, or cover some of the early costs of home ownership. Stuart Doyle, pictured, has benefited.

My cashback came to £1,500

A lender helped Stuart Doyle get on the housing ladder this summer – and gave him enough cashback to buy new furniture and have building work done on his property before moving in.
Stuart, 26, had been living with his parents to save money while he looked for a first home in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
He took out a Regular Home Saver account with Yorkshire Bank and saved £200 a month for a year, which qualified him for £1,000 cashback when he eventually got a mortgage.
The fee-free, three-year fixed rate he chose, set at 3.89 per cent, came with an additional cashback of £500.
Retail manager Stuart says: ‘The two payments gave me enough money to sort a few things out and the low fixed rate means I know what my monthly payments will be until 2017.’
